Windows Conversion

Last modified 10:01, 15 Jun 2013

This tutorial will cover how to use Handbrake to convert a video file into a smaller format for uploading to the web.

Note: These steps are not specific to Chalk & Wire. They also apply to converting videos to smaller formats for uploading to sites such as Youtube or Google Video.

Download Handbrake

Download Handbrake for Windows from http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php and install the program on your computer.

You will need to select either the 64 bit or 32 bit operating system, depending on your system type. To verify which operating system your computer is running, use your Start menu to select Control Panel > System and Security > System. In the System section, you will see the type of operating system your computer is running.

Open Handbrake & Select Video File

Cick the "Source" icon located on the far left side of the tool bar and select the 'Video File' option from the drop-down menu.

Select the video file from your computer and click "Open".

Select Output File Type & Destination

1. Using the Devices drawer on the right side of the application, select the iPod option. This will adjust the settings in the main HandBrake window for you.
2. Click the Browse button to select the output file desitnation.

1. Select the destination for the converted file. In this example we have selected the 'Destop'.
2. Enter a file name for the converted file. It is usually a good idea to name the converted file differently than the original so that you do not confuse them.
3. Click Save.

Start Video Conversion

Click the Start button located in the top left of the tool bar.

Once the conversion has started, you will see its status at the bottom of the HandBrake window.

You will be alerted when the video conversion process is complete.

Final Output Comparison

This is a comparison between the source (Large Quicktime window) and the converted output (small Quicktime window). The main difference between the two is the dimension and size of the video file. The smaller MP4 version is similar in size to the Flash players used by online video streaming without a massive loss of quality.

Source File: 105.2 MB; .mov
Converted File: 15 MB; .mp4 (now playable on your iPod)
